Fleas, Flea Bombs, and Pull-Ups

Hello out there!  I thought I might take a minute and post about life these days…life at 37.5 weeks pregnant.  Life with a house torn apart.  Life where total sleep deprivation is becoming a way of life.  Life where vacuuming until 1am is the norm…because we have a terrible case of fleas in our house.  Terrible.  We thought after 6 flea bombs, tons of cleaning, combined with an outdoor cat, we would be good to go.  And then we cleaned under our bed last night and I think we both were close to despairing.  But the room is now extra clean, the rug is gone to the shed…hoping to clean it soon.  The up side is we threw a bunch of stuff away.  It’s amazing how the productive we can be past midnight.  Then we both get to try to sleep feeling itchy.  Whether we are imagining it or not the itch is very real when those nasty little critters are all over the house.  I wonder if our sheets will survive another washing because they have been washed and washed and washed again.

But before I let you think our only problem is fleas…let me tell you about Cora’s latest quirk.  She’s decided although she is not going to pee-pee on the potty, she is going to sleep without a wet pull-up.  Friday night she decided to wake up at 3:30 and was impossible to put back down.  I could not figure out what the problem was…so the three of us ended up greeting the morning when it was barely morning but we survived the day.  Sunday night she kept yelling out “Mommy!  Mommy!”  Justin checked on her and she seemed fine.  By the third “Mommy!  Mommy!” I went to check on her and found her sans pull-up or pants…little wet spots on the bed.  Wide awake at 4am. She’s also been doing this during her nap time.   I am so thankful she slept last night…even if I didn’t fall asleep ’til 3am it was nice knowing that she was sleeping well.

Oh…and my house looks like this.

All the main living spaces are total chaos.  Thankfully we were able to spend all day at Justin’s parents house as the sliding doors (that were in the kitchen) were torn out yesterday and Cora had total access to the addition.  For some reason i keep trying to clean…because I have this panicked feeling that I am bringing poor Elinor home to a dump crawling with fleas.  It makes me very thankful she has not made her debut early.  Hopefully things will be a little bit more under control two weeks from now.

But amidst all this chaos God (yes, I firmly believe God provides these little things along the way) would surprise us with a free hanging swing this morning.  Justin happened to drive by a neighbor’s trash and they had a wood hanging swing…exactly what we have wanted, by the side of the road. It’s in perfect condition. Have I mentioned we’ve been wanting one for two years and have been scanning craigslist for about that same amount of time?  A “little” blessing like that really cheers my heart during this time of craziness.

So another day begins.  I feel like I’m living in the twilight zone…nesting gone wrong.  I am vacuuming twice a day and mopping too…because I will not let these fleas beat me.  However, if you were to walk into our home you would think I had never mopped and that I have some sort of disorder that makes me drop things randomly, throughout my home.

So here’s to…a beautiful addition that is testing my patience.  May I glorify God during this time and  remember to count my many blessings.  A house infested with fleas…may I mop and vacuum faster then they can lay eggs and eat my family and may Elinor continue to grow well and arrive in God’s perfect timing.

Happy Tuesday to all of you!

Praying for you so much during this trying time. Hopefully once the last flea has died and the floor has been mopped, Elinor will make her debut. Such a perfectly timed blessing with the swing, it will go perfectly with the new addition!

I worked for a vet back before I had kids, and we sold a product called Fleabusters (http://www.fleabuster.com/) and it absolutely gets rid of fleas. It takes up to 6 weeks to eradicate all life cycles, but after that they guarantee you to be flea free for a year (unless you steam clean). You basically sprinkle it in your carpet, rugs, and upholstered items, brush it in, and then vacuum up the excess. It’s safe too, because it works as an abrasive to the fleas exoskeleton causing them to dehydrate and die. No harm to crawling babies, completely safe. Fumigating isn’t the safest thing. Obviously it won’t kill ya, but it’s not the best for the little people. Not to mention it doesn’t eradicate all of the life cycles, unless you continually bomb.
Anywho, everyone that used it LOVED it and said it was the best they had ever used. Come to think of it, my parents used it in a rent house, and it worked great….Good luck with all of that, I know it’s frustrating!

Q went through a phase where he removed his diapers and pull ups in the night. Also, with boys you seem to have a lot of random leaks, thanks to the fact they have quite the line of fire if their equipment is not placed correctly in their pull up. Ahem. 😛 If it isn’t one thing, it’s another. So I’ve come to discover. 🙂

Goodness, what a thing to go through so close to your due date! I admire your attitude about it though. 🙂 It’s so hard not to have everything *perfect* right before the baby comes… but, I guess it prepares us to adapt to the slightly chaotic nature of life with a newborn!

I can’t believe how close you are! Anytime now, but I hope for your sake she stays put until things are a little calmer!

  7. I’ve tried reading through this twice already today but kept getting interrupted by the kids:) the fleas are making me itchy, in fact I have to admit that I checked the dog after your post, hope that things settle down a bit for you before Elinor comes. And I LOVE that you took pictures of your house the way it is, the truth of how today was for you! I think thats a blessing for others to see as well, its life with a baby on the way, a toddler running around and a house expansion underway!

    hang in there!
